Roam Dotonbori’s lively streets, taste the best of Japanese cuisine, and visit Namba Yasaka Jinja or Shitennoji temples. Visit iconic temples like Fushimi Inari, stroll the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and explore the historic Higashiyama district. The Japanese culture, the vibrancy of the cities, and, of course, the Japanese food are just a few highlights of why I keep returning. So, when I crafted this 10-day itinerary for Japan, I focused on those exact things. In 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Missav – Pussy Hawaii, and destroyed or damaged many ships and airplanes of the United States.
On the upside, avoiding dairy products is straightforward, as they are uncommon in traditional Japanese cuisine. Peanuts and other tree nuts are basically not used in Japanese cooking, with the exception of a few snacks and desserts. On the upside, Japan’s vast array of soy-based products offers plenty of options to get your protein. If you’re OK with trace quantities of fish or meat stock, in the prepared food sections of supermarkets and department store basements, you can also find many dishes including various types of beans, both sweet and savory. The teppanyaki (鉄板焼き, confusingly known in the U.S. as «hibachi») and self-grill yakiniku (焼肉, Japanese-style «Korean barbecue») cooking methods, as well as the deep fried tempura (天ぷら) battered shrimp and vegetables originate here.
The largest garden, and the favorite of many travellers, is actually Ritsurin Park in Takamatsu. Hotels with wheelchair-accessible rooms can be hard to find and are often labeled «barrier free» (バリアフリー baria furii) or «universal» (ユニバーサル yunibāsaru) instead of «accessible». Even if an accessible room is available, most hotels require booking via phone or email. An international driver’s license, Japanese license or translated national license will be required if you wish to rent a car or drive in Japan, and must be carried at all times. Uber and Didi are available in major cities, but they can only be used to book taxis and limousines, and charge a premium for the convenience.
It consists of a great string of islands in a northeast-southwest arc that stretches for approximately 1,500 miles (2,400 km) through the western North Pacific Ocean. Nearly the entire land area is taken up by the country’s four main islands; from north to south these are Hokkaido (Hokkaidō), Honshu (Honshū), Shikoku, and Kyushu (Kyūshū). Honshu is the largest of the four, followed in size by Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. The national capital, Tokyo (Tōkyō), in east-central Honshu, is one of the world’s most populous cities.
With the Meiji Restoration and the reopening of Japan in the nineteenth century], borrowing occurred from German, French and English. Currently, words of English origin are the most commonly borrowed. Both inflect, though they do not show the full range of conjugation found in true verbs.The rentaishi in Modern Japanese are few in number, and unlike the other words, are limited to directly modifying nouns.|For example, the -san suffix («Mr», «Mrs», «Miss», or «Mx») is an example of honorific language. It is not used to talk about oneself or when talking about someone from one’s company to an external person, since the company is the speaker’s in-group. When speaking to a person from another company (i.e., a member of an out-group), however, a Japanese person will use the plain or the humble register to refer to the speech and actions of their in-group superiors. Formerly, standard Japanese in writing (文語, bungo, «literary language») was different from colloquial language (口語, kōgo). Bungo was the main method of writing Japanese until about 1900; since then kōgo gradually extended its influence and the two methods were both used in writing until the 1940s. Bungo still has some relevance for historians, literary scholars, and lawyers (many Japanese laws that survived World War II are still written in bungo, although there are ongoing efforts to modernize their language).|Yet even with a more efficient and technologically enabled force, Japan’s military will still require manpower. Applying a strategy of so-called minimal manning—working with as few service members as possible—is not a solution but a Band-Aid. To develop, produce, and operate new and increasingly indispensable technologies, Japan will need more highly trained—and highly paid—soldiers for advanced warfare. And infrastructure such as ships require several hundred people to operate.|The cards are completely interchangeable, but Suica charges a small fee for a refund (¥220), while PASMO does not. The cards can be recharged at train stations and convenience stores such as 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson. The card is available at Narita and Haneda airports and major train stations in Tokyo, no deposit required. The card can be recharged at the same places as the regular Suica but expires after 28 days and cannot be refunded. For easy cash withdrawal, ATMs (ē tī emu), also known as «cash corners» (キャッシュコーナー kyasshu kōnā), are ubiquitous in Japan and can be found at most convenience stores and train stations.|Space here is tight so it’s hard to get in (your best bet is on a weekday), but once you get into your rolls, you won’t really care about a wait. Hiroki’s $155, 20-course omakase has been around forever, and on most nights, it’s still worth the money. You might eat expertly cooked wagyu beef tongue covered in white bean foam and gold flakes, and spongy matcha tea cake to end your anniversary or birthday dinner. And whether you’re at the crowded sushi bar watching the chefs precisely slice salmon or sitting at one of the intimately lit tables with a group of friends, you’ll feel like everybody working at the Fishtown restaurant can somehow read your mind.}

Hiragana are also written in a superscript called furigana above or beside a kanji to show the proper reading. This is done to facilitate learning, as well as to clarify particularly old or obscure (or sometimes invented) readings. Hiragana are used for words without kanji representation, for words no longer written in kanji, for replacement of rare kanji that may be unfamiliar to intended readers, and also following kanji to show conjugational endings. Because of the way verbs (and adjectives) in Japanese are conjugated, kanji alone cannot fully convey Japanese tense and mood, as kanji cannot be subject to variation when written without losing their meaning.

The official list of jōyō kanji has been revised several times, but the total number of officially sanctioned characters has remained largely unchanged. Historically, attempts to limit the number of kanji in use commenced in the mid-nineteenth century, but did not become a matter of government intervention until after Japan’s defeat in the World War II
Jōyō kanji and jinmeiyō kanji (an appendix of additional characters for names) are approved for registering personal names. Uchi-soto is a concept embodied in the Japanese language, which involves making a distinction between in-groups (uchi, 内, «inside») and out-groups (soto, 外, «outside»). When speaking with someone from an out-group, the out-group must be honored, and the in-group humbled. One of the complexities of the uchi-soto relationship is that groups are not static; they overlap and change over time and according to situation. This distinction between groups is a fundamental part of Japanese social custom.

We’ve got this together, and I’m here to cheer you on every step of the way. Keep in mind that focusing on kanji and vocabulary with a tutor tends to be a poor use of this time. Most teachers don’t have any idea how to teach kanji (it’s just, «go learn these kanji and vocab by next week») and many tutors try to promote rote memorization because that’s how they learned as a child. It’s time to learn how and when to introduce vocabulary words from outside your kanji studies into your study routine. In this guide you will learn how to narrow down kanji meanings and readings to the most important ones.
Learning to Type Kanji
Japan has several major political parties, which have shifted, merged, and split over time — which probably explains their confusing names. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP, 自民党 Jimintō), which is generally conservative and pro-business, has been in power almost continuously since 1955. Led by geriatric bureaucrats, mired in factional politics and endless minor scandals, the LDP is increasingly unpopular, but as of 2024 continues to reign with no compelling alternatives in sight. Japan is a constitutional monarchy, modeled after the British parliamentary system.
